Prostate Health

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found just below the bladder in men. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine through the penis. The prostate makes fluid for semen. It grows naturally with age, usually without problems.

BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, occurs when the enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, making urination difficult. Symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting a urine stream
  • Feeling unable to complete urination

Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate. Often caused by bacteria, it is the male equivalent of a urinary tract infection. Prostatitis is rarely serious. Symptoms may include:

  • Painful urination or ejaculation
  • Fever and chills
  • Pelvic pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Cloudy urine
